How to Rock All Black

Black has been a staple in fashion for as long as fashion has been a thing. From runways of Paris and New York, to the underground punk scene, black clothing can be worn for almost any occasion. From black-tie affairs to red carpets, goth bands to country musicians, black can be rocked and rolled into almost any situation. Take a look at some classic people who have donned the all-black look, and let’s think about how you can make it work for you.

Man dressed in black

The Man in Black
Perhaps no one more famously took to black clothing the man who earned the nickname “The Man in Black,” Johnny Cash. Johnny wore black almost all the time, probably first because he like it, but later as part of his persona. In his lyrics he described “I wear the black for the poor and the beaten down, livin’ in the hopeless, hungry side of town. I wear it for the prisoner who has long paid for his crime, but is there because he’s a victim of the times.” Johnny Cash took the color black and truly made it his own. In a time when psychedelic day-glo colors were everywhere, he refuted the common theme and walked his own line.

Woman dressed like Audrey Hepburn.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s
Perhaps the most famous image of a woman dressed in black, if not one of the most famous images of any woman, is that of Audrey Hepburn playing Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. That long, sleek black dress with extended black gloves forever changed the way women dressed after this film made its debut.

How To…
So how can we learn from these instances of celebrity fashion trends and apply them to real life? The key to rocking all black is to keep it interesting. Black can be boring, so you need to look good by keeping things interesting. One way to make a boring black outfit look immediately better is by putting a belt on it. Belt’s are not only slimming, but the can add some color. A gold buckle goes a long way, making that black dress seem all the more elegant.

Next, think about textures and shades. If you’re wearing a dull black dress, what about adding a shiny black fur coat, or a leather jacket? Even shiny shoes can make a dull dress look better.

If you’re going for a more casual look, you can wear a black graphic T-shirt. Think of the classic Jack Daniels logo shirt, or a black shirt with an interesting design on the front. The best thing about black is that you can add just about any color or design and everything will still match. You can also go for some black jeans, and black Chuck Taylor All Stars for a classic laid-back feel. There are endless ways to make black work, do what feels best for you!
